PIL in Calcutta High Court seeks double-side printing on A4 paper for court pleadings across West Bengal

17 Oct 2026 · Legal News · By LawQuorum

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a uniform rule requiring physical pleadings and documents to be filed on 75 GSM A4 paper printed on both sides, in courts across West Bengal.

The petition, titled Akash Sharma v. Registrar General, High Court at Calcutta and Another, has been filed by advocate Akash Sharma. It argues that such a practice would cut down paper consumption, printing services and costs, and reduce the physical bulk of court records.

The PIL points out that on February 22, 2021, the Calcutta High Court had asked its administrative side to consider mandating the use of A4 paper with double-side printing for pleadings and filings. According to the plea, the further progress of that direction could not be found through publicly available records or notices.

The petition mainly seeks to find out the outcome of the February 22, 2021 order, and asks for a fresh consideration of the matter so that a uniform practice of using 75 GSM A4 paper in duplex-printed format is prescribed for all courts in the State.

The case is listed for hearing on November 23.
